Understanding Wet Bulb Temperatures for Cooling Towers in Pakistan

When sizing an industrial cooling tower or evaluating water-cooled chillers in Pakistan, selecting the correct design wet bulb temperature (WBT) is critical. The WBT represents the lowest temperature that can be achieved through evaporative cooling and dictates the size, capacity, and efficiency of your cooling tower. A carefully chosen WBT prevents undersizing (which leads to costly plant shutdowns during peak summer) and oversizing (which wastes capital and space).

Average Peak Summer Wet Bulb Data

Karachi

Coastal, high humidity (May-Oct)
29°C

Lahore / Punjab

Monsoon peak (July-August)
28°C

Islamabad / North

Moderate humidity
26°C

Multan / Sukkur

Hot and dry (Extreme sensible heat)
27°C

Why Wet Bulb Matters

Cooling towers rely on the principle of evaporation. In high-humidity coastal cities like Karachi or Gwadar, the air is already saturated with moisture. This makes it harder for water to evaporate, raising the minimum cooling temperature. By contrast, in dry, hot areas like Multan or Sukkur, the ambient temperature may hit 45°C+, but the low humidity allows for highly efficient evaporative cooling, resulting in a lower wet bulb temperature constraint.

Design Approach

A cooling tower cannot supply water colder than the wet bulb temperature. The difference between the cold water produced and the WBT is the approach. An approach of 3°C to 5°C is standard for industrial applications in Pakistan.

How to Size a Cooling Tower: Formulas & Definitions

Understanding the math behind our cooling tower selection software ensures you get the most accurate, efficient industrial cooling solutions for your facility in Pakistan.

1

Cooling Tower Tonnage & Heat Load

The heat load represents the total amount of heat the cooling tower must reject. This directly determines the tonnage capacity required.

Formula (Metric / kW): Heat Load (kW) = Flow (m³/hr) × Range (°C) × 1.163
2

Understanding Range

The Range is the temperature difference between the hot water entering the tower and the cold water leaving the tower. It relies entirely on the heat load of your process and the water flow rate.

Range (°C) = Hot Water Temp - Cold Water Temp
3

Calculating Approach

The Approach is the difference between the cold water temperature leaving the tower and the ambient wet bulb temperature. A smaller approach means a larger, more expensive tower. An approach of 3°C to 5°C is standard for Pakistani industries.

Approach (°C) = Cold Water Temp - Wet Bulb Temp
